Our trip to Scotland and England, June 2006. You are here: Scotland pictures (Inverness and the Highlands) See also: Cows, sheep, and a haunted castle London pictures Edinburgh pictures We arrived in London, but the Inverness area was the focal point of our trip to Scotland. After locating our first bed-and-breakfast, we set out sightseeing in our Vauxhall Astra, driving on the "wrong" side of the road. We stopped near this viaduct, still actively used by trains.
Then we turned south and drove along Loch Ness for
a while. Loch means "lake," and it's fed by the River Ness. The
yellow bushes are called gorse, made famous in Winnie the Pooh. We encountered our first castle and our first
pronunciation difficulty here. The next day we drove east of Inverness toward
Nairn, to find more castles. This is Castle Brodie (which was closed for
the day). And Cawdor Castle. It wasn't as
interesting as the older ones. With renovation and furnishings as recent
as the 17th century, this one looked almost new by comparison. They did have some nice gardens, though. Everywhere we went, there were endless fields
of yellow rapeseed plants. It's a popular crop used to produce cooking
oil. We were lucky, their color seemed to peak during the first few days
of our visit. Our next castle was Dunrobin, north of
Inverness. It has beautiful gardens and a daily bird-of-prey show
featuring falcons and a very tame owl. After performing, the owl sat in
the audience and watched the rest of the show. There were lots more castles, ruins, churches,
bridges... here's just a small sample. Bob relaxes in the ruins of Balvenie Castle.
